Mental Math Shortcuts for Rapid Percentage Calculations
- The 10% Benchmark Rule: To find 10% of any number, simply move the decimal point one position to the left (e.g. 10% of 240 is 24). To find 5%, take half of the 10% value ($24 \div 2 = 12$).
- The 1% Micro Rule: To find 1% of any number, move the decimal point two places to the left (e.g. 1% of 3,500 is 35).
- Reversible Percentage Property ($X\% \text{ of } Y = Y\% \text{ of } X$): Percentages are completely reversible because multiplication is commutative. For example, calculating 16% of 50 in your head is difficult, but calculating 50% of 16 is trivial ($16 \div 2 = \mathbf{8}$). Both calculations yield the exact same result!
